PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian government is intensifying its push towards digital transformation by planning the expansion of 5G internet services to 67 industrial areas across the country. Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced the initiative as part of the government’s commitment to bolstering connectivity in industrial zones to enhance competitiveness and attract investments.
Fahmi emphasized that reliable and high-speed internet is crucial for businesses to adopt advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and automation. “The rollout of 5G is a game-changer for Malaysia’s industries, as it provides the infrastructure necessary for innovation and global competitiveness,” Fahmi said during a press conference at the Ministry of Communications and Digital today.
Strategic Focus on Industrial Growth
The targeted industrial areas are expected to benefit significantly from the deployment of 5G, which promises ultra-fast internet speeds, low latency, and enhanced network reliability. This initiative aims to cater to industries like manufacturing, logistics, and technology, which are pivotal to Malaysia’s economic growth.
Fahmi stated that the focus is not only on urban areas but also on ensuring equitable access to 5G services in rural and semi-urban industrial zones. “We want to bridge the digital divide by ensuring that industries in all regions, including smaller towns, have access to world-class internet services,” he said.
Progress in 5G Rollout
Malaysia has made notable strides in its 5G rollout, with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) leading the initiative. As of late 2024, 5G coverage had reached over 70% of populated areas, and the government remains committed to achieving nationwide coverage by the end of 2025.
The expansion into industrial areas aligns with the government’s broader strategy to attract high-value investments and position Malaysia as a regional leader in digital innovation. Fahmi also highlighted that the implementation of 5G could significantly boost productivity and drive the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies.
Support for Businesses
To support industries in adopting 5G, Fahmi announced that various incentives and programs will be introduced. These include grants and training initiatives to help businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), leverage 5G technology for growth.
“We understand that transitioning to new technologies can be challenging, particularly for smaller businesses. The government is committed to providing the necessary resources and support to ensure no one is left behind,” he added.
Public-Private Collaboration
Fahmi also stressed the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector to ensure the success of the initiative. Partnerships with telecommunications companies, industry stakeholders, and local authorities are expected to drive the seamless implementation of 5G infrastructure in these industrial zones.

The expansion of 5G services to industrial areas is part of the government’s larger digital economy agenda, which aims to position Malaysia as a hub for innovation and technological advancement in Southeast Asia. Fahmi concluded by reiterating the government’s vision of a connected and competitive Malaysia, where industries have the tools to thrive in the global digital economy.
