Kuala Lumpur – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has defended the recent electricity tariff hike by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), stating that it will not impact 85% of Malaysians. He also questioned critics who oppose taxing the wealthy, asking, “Where will our money come from if we don’t tax the rich?”

Speaking at a press conference, Anwar clarified that the increase in electricity tariffs is targeted mainly at large businesses and high-consumption users, ensuring that the majority of households remain unaffected. He emphasized that such measures are necessary to balance the nation’s economic needs while protecting lower-income groups.

The Prime Minister also addressed concerns over government revenue, arguing that a fair tax system must include contributions from wealthy individuals and major corporations. “If we don’t generate revenue through fair taxation, how can we fund essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure?” he asked.

Anwar assured that his administration remains committed to shielding the lower and middle-income population from unnecessary financial burdens. He reiterated that government policies would prioritize economic stability, social welfare, and equitable growth.

The electricity tariff adjustment follows recent economic reforms aimed at improving Malaysia’s fiscal position while ensuring sustainable development. With global economic uncertainties and rising costs, the government is taking measures to ensure financial responsibility while maintaining social protection for ordinary Malaysians.

Despite criticism from certain quarters, Anwar reaffirmed that Malaysia’s economic policies must be designed for long-term stability, with fair contributions from all sectors of society, including the wealthiest individuals and businesses.
