Johor Bahru – The Malaysian government is open to implementing either a Light Rail Transit (LRT) or an Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system to improve connectivity between the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link and surrounding areas in Johor, according to a state executive councillor.
Johor’s Public Works, Transport, and Infrastructure Committee chairman, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, stated that discussions are ongoing to determine the most efficient and cost-effective mode of transport to complement the RTS Link, which is set to begin operations in 2026.
“The federal government is looking into the best option to ensure seamless connectivity for commuters using the RTS Link. Both LRT and ART are being considered, with feasibility studies underway,” he said.
The RTS Link, which will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands in Singapore, is expected to significantly ease congestion at the Causeway, benefiting thousands of daily commuters. However, there is a need for an effective local transit system to connect the RTS station with other key locations in Johor Bahru.
Mohamad Fazli emphasized that the decision will depend on several factors, including cost, efficiency, and integration with existing transport networks. He added that the state government is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for commuters and will work closely with Putrajaya to finalize the plan.
The introduction of a supporting transit system is expected to boost economic activity in Johor, attract investments, and enhance cross-border mobility between Malaysia and Singapore. Further details on the selected transport system will be announced once the feasibility study is completed.
