PASIR MAS: A strict crackdown on illegal crossings at the Malaysia-Thailand border in Rantau Panjang has forced operators to shift their activities to the Thai side of the border, according to General Operations Force (GOF) Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid.
The enforcement, which began on December 1, has led to the desertion of six illegal bases, including two in the town centre. However, isolated cases persist, with a 67-year-old Thai national detained after crossing illegally, claiming he was blacklisted by Malaysian authorities.
The closure has also disrupted local economic activities, with previously bustling stalls near the illegal bases now shut.
Illegal crossings through routes like the Pound and MCA jetties had been common but are now under tighter surveillance. The move demonstrates growing community compliance with the ban, enhancing border security.
