KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in Sarawak and Sabah has surged to 4,000 as of 8 pm yesterday, up from 1,250 earlier in the day.
In Sarawak, 2,981 people from 862 families are housed in 36 temporary relief centres (PPS), with Serian being the worst-hit district, sheltering 1,406 individuals. Other affected areas include Bau, Bintulu, Kuching, and Miri, where a landslide in Kampung Lereng Bukit displaced 105 residents.
Meanwhile, in Sabah, flood evacuees spiked to 1,019, with Kota Marudu remaining the worst-affected, hosting 673 individuals. New PPS have been opened in Beluran, Sandakan, and Telupid as evacuations continue.
Landslides have blocked key roads, including Jalan Marak Parak in Kota Marudu and Jalan Telupid-Tongod, forcing motorists to use alternative routes. The Sabah Public Works Department (JKR) has warned of further disruptions as heavy rain persists.
