KUALA LUMPUR: Contractors responsible for the aerotrain system at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) have yet to confirm a firm timeline for the resumption of the service, raising concerns about delays and disruptions at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke revealed that despite ongoing discussions and follow-ups, no definitive date has been provided for when the aerotrain will be operational again. The system has been out of service since March 2023, with works currently underway for its replacement.

“The contractors have been tasked with providing updates and ensuring progress, but so far, there is no firm date for the service to resume,” Loke said during a press conference on Monday (Jan 15). He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in the project’s execution.

The aerotrain system, which plays a vital role in connecting KLIA’s main terminal and satellite building, has been a cornerstone of the airport’s infrastructure. Its absence has forced the airport operator, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), to rely on shuttle buses to transport passengers between terminals—a solution that many travelers have described as inconvenient and time-consuming.

Passenger Disruption and Economic Impact

The prolonged disruption of the aerotrain service has raised concerns among stakeholders about the potential impact on Malaysia’s aviation sector. KLIA, which serves as a critical hub for international travelers, risks tarnishing its reputation due to operational inefficiencies.

Frequent travelers have expressed frustration with the lack of a reliable transportation system between terminals, highlighting the need for swift action to address the issue.

Commitment to Alternatives

In the meantime, the Transport Ministry has urged MAHB to improve alternative transport options to minimize inconvenience for passengers. Loke assured the public that efforts are being made to ensure smoother operations while awaiting the completion of the aerotrain replacement.

Call for Accountability

This development places pressure on the contractors to expedite their work and provide clearer communication about the project’s progress. The Transport Ministry is expected to closely monitor the situation to ensure that the project aligns with its deadlines and quality standards.

The aerotrain’s service disruption continues to be a point of contention, with industry experts calling for more stringent oversight of infrastructure projects critical to the nation’s connectivity and tourism industry.

Further updates on the aerotrain system’s progress are anticipated in the coming weeks.
