KUALA PILAH: Malaysia has become the first country to implement a 6-way 4G Multi Operator Core Network (MOCN) sharing agreement, a groundbreaking collaboration among six telecommunications companies, announced Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

The agreement, signed in May 2022 and led by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), aims to improve internet connectivity in underserved areas. Participating telcos—Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM, and YTL Communications—have joined forces to share network infrastructure, an unprecedented move globally.

Launching the initiative at Bukit Putus, Fahmi praised its success in improving connectivity for rural areas and highlighted pilot sites in Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Selangor, and Penang.

This innovative project sets guidelines for telcos to share both passive and active infrastructure, enhancing efficiency and optimizing resources. MCMC emphasized its benefits in improving 4G services in high-demand areas like highways, universities, and hospitals.

“Malaysia has shown the world that competing telcos can collaborate to improve connectivity for the people,” Fahmi stated.
