PETALING JAYA: Tourism Malaysia is ramping up its efforts to attract Asean tourists by focusing on business and border tourism, aiming to solidify Malaysia’s position as a top regional destination.

Deputy director-general Lee Thai Hung announced plans for targeted sales missions in border areas with Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Brunei. These missions will bring tourism industry players—including airlines, hotels, and theme parks—directly to potential visitors.

“With Malaysia chairing Asean this year, we have a prime opportunity to host regional events and boost tourism further,” Lee said at a Chinese New Year event at KLIA.

Malaysia led Asean in foreign tourist arrivals in 2024, recording 38 million visitors, surpassing Thailand’s 35.5 million. The country aims to maintain this momentum with enhanced promotional strategies and competitive tourism offerings.
