While many in the Chinese community celebrate the Lunar New Year with their families, 75-year-old Tan Eng Wang has a unique tradition—she marks the occasion with her Malay neighbours in Selising.

Unlike the usual family gatherings, Tan prefers to share the festivities with her neighbours, most of whom are Malay. She has lived in the area for over 40 years and considers her neighbours as close as family.

What makes her celebration even more special is her hospitality. The elderly barber not only welcomes guests into her home but also prepares traditional Malay dishes such as nasi dagang, ketupat, and satay to treat her visitors.

“This has been my tradition for many years, and now my daughter is also continuing it. It is a way to show appreciation and gratitude for the kindness and friendship we have received,” said Tan.

She emphasized that this practice has strengthened bonds within the multiracial community, proving that cultural and religious differences do not hinder unity and harmony.

Her heartwarming gesture serves as an inspiring example of Malaysia’s rich multicultural spirit, where celebrations are not just limited to one community but shared among neighbours as a testament to lasting friendships.
