CYBERJAYA(21JAN) The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has called for regulations on water usage by industries, particularly data centres, which consume enormous amounts of water for cooling systems.
SPAN chairman Charles Santiago stressed the need for sustainable practices, urging federal-state collaboration on projects like off-river storage to enhance water supply. He also proposed rainwater and reclaimed water use for cooling.
With 79 data centre applications in Selangor and Johor, water demand could reach 440 million litres daily by 2035—23% of Johor’s current usage. Santiago lauded Selangor’s zero-discharge policy, urging other states to adopt similar green initiatives to prevent resource depletion.
