PETALING JAYA, Feb 2 – The Trump administration’s proposed 100% tariffs on BRICS nations could hurt Malaysia’s economy, particularly its semiconductor sector, warned former MP Charles Santiago.

With over 200 US semiconductor firms operating in Penang, these tariffs could increase production costs, force companies to relocate, and lead to job losses.

Economist Yeah Kim Leng advised Malaysia to develop strategic policies to counter the impact, while Razman Latiff noted that BRICS has not explicitly aimed to replace the US dollar, urging Malaysia to monitor tariff policies closely.

Experts warn that industries like medical gloves and electronics could see prices double overnight, further straining Malaysia’s economy.
