KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 – A 61-year-old retiree lost RM70,000 to a phone scam syndicate after a fraudster, posing as a police officer, met her in person.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said the victim was first contacted on Jan 15 by a scammer claiming her phone number was linked to an illegal online business. She was later threatened with frozen bank accounts and coerced into transferring her money to a so-called “safe account.”

Authorities warn against call transfers between agencies, urging the public to immediately hang up on suspicious calls. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
